The Music You Don't Know

Mary Galime

Music reviews are the best! You get to gush over your favorite, or not so favorite music, and you choose what is right or wrong about the music. There are many different types of music reviews you can create. In this assignment we focus in on the music you've NEVER heard. These are some of my favorite to watch. The prep work depends on finding music you have never heard before. You may want to give yourself a little context about the new music, but this review depends on your reaction. Check out this video of @TwinsTheNewtrend watching Ray Charles, and @Heline listening to Jethro Tull for the first time. These videos are all about emotional reaction and naration to your first time listening to new music.

Time to make your own!

1. Ask 5 friends and/or family members what their favorite music video on YouTube is that you have never seen. This could be ethnic music performed on instruments you've never seen, music that was performed before you were born, or current artists that you have never heard of.

2. Set up your smart phone or computer to video your reaction to what you are listening. Whatever audio you are listening to, run through headphones so it is not picked up on the video recording your reaction. Don't forget to narrate! What is surprising you? What do you love? What is the song making you feel? What does it remind you of?

3.Post recording, to make a finished product you will want to put in the video or audio track to add into the corner that starts at the moment you start listening in the video so your audience can listen along with you.

IF LIVE VIDEO IS NOT AN OPTION:

Though the above examples are  videos of live reactions, you can accomplish the same task by writing about your experience or just recording an audio track of your naration as you listen.

The main thing your audience wants is your reaction to what you listen to, so have fun, and don't forget to  take breaks to talk about what you're hearing!
